Keep Safe Around Water!

April Pools Day kicked off our annual water safety campaign this year and we want to make sure that everyone is as safe as they can be around all types of water. Remember that water can be found in buckets, bathtubs, toilets, gutters, and anywhere your child is curious and you forget to look. Remember the ABC and D’s of water safety whenever you’re around a pool or other body of water, including the lake.

A: Adult supervision of children around water at all times
B: Barriers for pools, such as a 5' tall fence. If you can afford to buy a pool, how can you not afford to buy a fence that may save your child's life?
C: Classes to help your child learn to swim and CPR classes for you
D: Devices such as personal flotation devices and telephones right next to the pool in case you must call for help

Please designate one adult to watch the pool during gatherings. Many drownings and near-drownings occur when there’s confusion over who was supposed to be watching the kids and the guilt is life-long.

Our focus page on Drowning Prevention has more information and please consider donating to Clayre's Pool Fence Fund. Clayre was 13 months old when she wandered away from her mom and into the family pool, 2 weeks before her dad was to take vacation time to install a pool fence. Clayre's family set up the fund so that other families won't have to wait to save up enough money, like they did with tragic results, to install a pool fence. Through this wonderful fund, they've made several pools in the valley much safer for families who couldn't afford to otherwise.
